"Hey Luke, we blew up the Death Star. Shouldn't he be kissing up to us instead?"
"That's what I like about you Wedge. Modest to a fault."
— Wedge Antilles and Luke Skywalker

Mission 6 is the second mission of Act II. Following the destruction of the Death Star, the Empire launches a counter-attack to take out the Rebel Alliance. X2 assists in the evacuation of the planet and relocation to a new base.

Synopsis

Since Desolation Station, X2 has served the Rebellion on many missions throughout the galaxy. He has been given command of his own squadron – Grey Squadron. He has come to Yavin 4 after the destruction of the Death Star to meet up with one of the new Grey Squadron recruits – former bounty hunter Shara Vayle. Their meeting is cut short when the Imperial retribution force arrives above the planet to wipe out the Rebel leaders based on the planet. This level is all about a big open battle experience rather than lots of individual tasks to accomplish.

Objectives

Mission Intro - Scripted Cutscene

X2 visits Yavin 4 to meet a potential new recruit for Grey Squadron, a former bounty hunter. While talking however, the Imperials begin an assault on the planet.

Rally at the Springs

The Rebels have been scattered by the sudden Imperial attack. X2 and the other Rebels on the far side of the valley have been cut off from the temple by the sudden invasion. All Rebels on the north side are instructed to regroup at the nearest defensible position, the springs. Shara gets to her X-wing to join the fight in air around the temple. Imperial bombers strafe the landing pad while orbital strikes target the temple. As X2 presses forward, Imperial shuttles drop off troops across the map. X2 fights through the first waves of Imperial Stormtroopers to the springs and holds the area until the rest of the Rebels regroup around him.

Advance towards the Temple

X2 and his squad need to make their way back to the temple to evacuate. There are plenty of Stormtroopers in the way, however. Between the springs and walkway there is a large stretch of fairly open battlefield. Along the way X2 sees an air battle raging overhead and waves of Imperial troops setting up throughout the jungle.

Clear the Walkway of Imperial Snipers

An Imperial shuttle has dropped off snipers, who made their way into position on the walkway. From this position, they have a clear shot at the back door of the Yavin temple. You need to take them out so that the Rebels in the jungle can have a chance to make it back to the safety of the temple. With the snipers defeated, the Rebels in the jungle can move forward, creating a pincer for the Empire just outside the back door of the temple.

Destroy the AT-STs

X2 has cleared the walkway of snipers, but now there’s a bigger problem. AT-STs are patrolling the area in front of the temple hangar. They need to be destroyed so that the Rebel pilots can get out of the hangar in their X-wings. Rebels in anti-infantry turrets face off Stormtroopers and Shock Troopers as X2 clears the entrance to the temple.

Snipe the Imperials on the Temple

Imperial Scout Troopers have taken up ideal positions on the ledges of the Yavin temple. Taking them out will save many Rebel lives. There are sniper rifles that can be used on the walkway. Eliminated scouts fall off the temple’s ledges in an amusing fashion.

Fight to the Temple Command Room

The defensive line in front of the hangar has been broken. The Rebels fall back further into the hangar and the Empire is pushing forwards, as you attack from the back. X2 needs to stop the Stormtroopers from reaching the command room. Pushing forward into the hangar, the massive main door to the temple hangar closes behind X2, trapping the remaining Stormtroopers inside. A second defensive line inside the hangar finishes off the remaining Stormtroopers. As X2 player gets a moment’s peace, he meets up with Luke and Wedge in the command room.

Defend the Temple Command Room

The Rebels have fallen back to the command room of the temple to plan their escape. They are going to use the debris from the Death Star to shield their transport ships from the Star Destroyers and break out into hyperspace on the other side. X2 and Grey Squadron are going to join Luke and Rogue Squadron in the air to support the evacuation. As X2 reaches the command room, the Empire breaches the side entrance of the base and Stormtroopers pour in. Luke frantically destroys the Rebel data on various terminals as waves of Stormtroopers come in from both sides.

Get to an X-Wing

Luke has finished destroying the Rebel data and everyone must evacuate. He joins the fight and everyone pushes forward through the Stormtroopers, into the hangar.

Destroy TIE Fighters with Luke and Rogue Squadron

Now that the pilots are in their X-wings, the tide can turn and the Rebels can gain the upper hand. When X2 jumps in a ship, the massive main temple door opens, and Imperials start pouring in. Blasting out of there, he joins the battle with Luke and Rogue Squadron above the planet. Banter is exchanged between the Rogue Squadron and Grey Squadron members as they attempt to outdo one another with the number of TIE Fighters destroyed. Banter about the most kills plays up the thrill of dogfighting. The goal is to clear the path of TIE Fighters and TIE Bombers so everyone can escape through the Death Star debris. X2's X-wing has higher health than normal whereas Imperial ships have less health than normal. This should feel like a heroic moment, however straying too far from the objective will get the player killed by the Star Destroyers.

Fly through the Death Star Debris

Enough TIE Fighters have been destroyed for the evacuation to complete. Star Destroyers surround the landscape, and the only route available is to fly through the debris of the destroyed Death Star. Luke and Wedge fly through the debris ahead of X2.

Mission Outro - Scripted Event

X2 and Luke exchange some dialogue, reinforcing their friendship and referring to the Rebellion meeting at a rendezvous point (it is Hoth, but it is not mentioned).

Trivia

  • The events of Desolation Station and Yavin 4 take place two years apart. Between these two years, the DS version shows X2 go on a mission to Geonosis. X2, alongside Master Kota, rescue a captured Rebel strike team from an old droid factory. After escaping, the troopers wish to join X2 in battle. While initially reluctant, X2 agrees to becoming their leader. The squadron is named over a man who redeemed himself by helping others - Grey.

Audio Logs

Shara Vayle: I met up with Gil Tavoy, in a cantina called the Slag Pit on Nar Shaddaa. Gil was a smuggler who had provided transport for me on a few jobs. He was the one who convinced me that my life as a bounty hunter would be short and unpleasant, especially under the Empire. When Gil told me that he had joined a rebellion against the Empire, I was interested. He said rebels were looking for pilots to fly against the Empire. It didn't take much to get me to join up. I was ready for something, anything to get me off the smuggler's moon.

Darth Vader: The Rebels' bold strike against the Death Star has proven they are a threat that must be taken seriously.

X1: Once we find their hidden base my Lord, it will be the end of the Rebellion.

Darth Vader: The Dark Side of the Force is strong in you, General. Your twin brother is powerful as well it seems.

X1: He is a traitor and will be dealt with accordingly.

Darth Vader: There are elements within the Rebellion that might give him guidance in the Force. It is up to you to destroy him before he becomes too powerful.

EXT. YAVIN 4 – LANDING PAD, RUINS – DAY.

Various rebel fighters take off and land in a clearing in the jungle. Rebel Pilots are chatting and working on their ships. X2 walks towards a line of X-Wings on the rebel landing pad. X2 sees a slim woman with slick short hair parted on the side, dressed in black working on an X-Wing.

X2

You need a hand with that?

She turns around to face X2 sizing him up, putting a hand on her hip, the other holding a Fusion Cutter (similar to the one in Battlefront II, unlike III's).

SHARA

I thought all the clones went up with the Death Star.

X2

You must be Shara? You don’t look like any bounty hunter I’ve ever seen.

Shara moves closer to X2.

SHARA

Let's just say we both hung out with the wrong crowd in the past.

X2

If Kota recommends you, then you can’t be all that bad. Welcome to Grey Squadron.

Suddenly...

YAVIN REBEL COMMANDER (on radio)

Grey Leader, we're picking up unidentified ships in your vicinity.

A noise far overhead. A shrill mechanical roar...

The sound gets closer...

It is familiar.

A TIE Fighter.

YAVIN REBEL COMMANDER (on radio)

The fleet can't be far behind! Prepare for battle!

A wave of TIE Fighters scream overhead. The attack has begun.
