- "Pilot a starfighter and find the source of a mysterious signal."
- — Menu description
Training is the only optional campaign mission in Star Wars Battlefront III. It is meant to introduce the player to the various mechanics of the game and the controls.
Synopsis
The player gets an introduction to the main characters of the campaign, X1 and X2. While they are flying through Tatooine space, they find an unidentifiable signal and go to investigate. Soon, they find it was a Vulture Droid, spying on Republic operations. After eliminating the threat, they head down to Tatooine to meet Master Ferroda, their mentor and general. Before they could land, though, they learn that Outpost 9 is under heavy enemy opposition by Tusken Raiders. Once they clear the area, the brothers return to Mos Eisley using speeders. However on their journey they stumble upon a Rancor and are saved just in time by Master Ferroda.
Objectives
Mission Intro - Scripted Cutscene
X1 and X2 walk on a Republic Acclamator, exchanging banter prior to meeting with Master Ferroda who mentions that their presence is great for trooper morale.
Accompany Master Ferroda
X1 and X2 meet up with Master Ferroda, who expresses concerns over the situation on Tatooine. They follow him to the hangar of the Acclamator. During this, the player is shown the controls and has the ability to interact with various consoles. As they walk towards the hangar, Master Ferroda reveals that Chancellor Palpatine has been impressed with the brothers' clone trooper training program. X1 says it's about time they got some recognition but Master Ferroda responds that causing harm should not be celebrated as their goal is peace. Once they reach the hangar, they are saluted by clone troopers and informed of an unidentified craft with no life forms on the vicinity. X1 and X2 are sent to investigate.
Pilot the Starfighter
A clone trooper escorts the brothers to their starfighters. The player is shown the Guide Arrow mechanic, which reveals the quickest path towards the objective.
Investigate the Signal
X1 and X2 are looking around, trying to figure out the source of the signal. As they get closer, they discover it's a droid ship spying on Republic operations.
Destroy the Space Debris
X2 is informed that the lasers on his ship have been fine-tuned and that he should test them on the nearby debris. The objective expires when the player lands on the Acclamator.
Destroy the CIS Threat
The droid ship, a Vulture Droid, attempts to escape the area. X1 and X2 work together to destroy it, only to discover another one is behind them. Here the player is taught how to look behind when in a vehicle and how to use evasive maneuvers to dodge incoming missiles.
Land in the Republic Acclamator
With the area secured, the brothers are summoned back to the Acclamator in order to get to the surface with their squad. X1 dares X2 on a race to the hangar.
Board the LAAT Gunship
After the brothers have landed, they get on the LAAT Gunship in the east side of the hangar. Once they are in, the ship departs for the surface.
Fly down to Tatooine
X1 shows curiosity at why those Vulture Droids were alone. The possibility of them spinning off course is discarded, due to the amount of them that attacked them. X1 mentions the chance of them being scout ships, but this is also refuted by the lack of an invading force. After entering the planet, Tusken Raiders can be seen fighting Republic forces in the desert, as well as many troopers and vehicles within the city. X1 remarks that all these troops are relying on them for their training.
Rescue the Troopers
As soon as the brothers reach Mos Eisley and meet with Master Ferroda, they receive a distress call from Outpost 9, urging for immediate backup. The gunship rushes to the area, discovering it has been overrun by Tusken Raiders. X2 is called to use the LAAT Gunship's right ball turret to take out the Tuskens.
Defend the outpost from Tusken Raiders
Due to overwhelming resistance, the gunship is forced to retreat back to Mos Eisley and all passengers have to bail. This is the player's first ground combat experience and it will familiarize them with using blasters, snipers and thermal detonators.
Help the Engineer
Outpost 9 is secure, however an engineer was hurt during the battle. X2 has to use an ARC Cutter in order to heal him. Master Ferroda contacts them worrying about what happened but X1 shrugs it off saying the situation is under control. The brothers are called back into the town to begin with their training program. X1 shows annoyance at the lack of appreciation from the Jedi for their efforts.
Repair the Speeder Bike
The engineer has provided you his speeder, however it is damaged and needs to be repaired. Using the ARC Cutter, the speeder is quickly restored to working condition.
Keep up with X1
X2 has to follow X1 on the way to Mos Eisley. There are Tusken Raiders armed with sniper rifles in the hills of the desert. The player is taught how to operate land vehicles.
Defeat the Rancor
As they are nearing Mos Eisley, the brothers stumble across a Rancor. X1 manages to avoid the Rancor, but X2 barely makes it, having to slide off his speeder to avoid collision with the Rancor. At the last moment, Master Ferroda comes to the rescue, leaping in front of X2 with his lightsaber activated. The player assumes control of Master Ferroda. The Rancor has three ways of attack. It will roar, which if not blocked, will knock the player away. If the player gets near it, it will do a swipe, knocking the player away. At close range, the player can use force powers to temporarily incapacitate the Rancor and attack it. If the player stays far from it, it will do a charge attack, which can be dodged with rolling. Once successfully dodged, the Rancor will eventually collide with a surface and fall down stunned, giving time for the player to damage it.
Mission Outro - Scripted Cutscene
Once the Rancor is defeated, Master Ferroda takes a look at it. X1 shows disdain, claiming he is taking all the credit for the kill himself like all other Jedi.
Trivia
- The Rancor was initially meant to be a Krayt Dragon.
